Shanghai Disneyland: Spring 2016

Good evening everyone and welcome to The Magical Mystery Blog.

What’s a summer without a little magic? Each season seems to possess its own strange form of magic from the warm summer air to the wonder that bursts in our eyes when snow falls during winter. However, there’s one place in the world that oozes magic 365 days per year. That place is Walt Disney World, the home of dreams, hopes, and the endless possibilities where anything can happen. Florida is home to Walt Disney World while Disneylands reside in Japan, France, Hong Kong, California, and soon, Shanghai, China.

Just announced, Shanghai will have its own Disneyland theme park that will open in Spring 2016.

So what can we expect from Shanghai Disneyland? Well, it’ll have the main central hub that most Disneylands have where the castle resides in the middle and each branch leads to another section of the theme park. Adventure Isle, Tomorrowland, the Gardens of Imagination, Mickey Avenue, Fantasyland, and Treasure Cove have been unveiled.

Adventure Isle appears to be a mix of Animal Kingdom and Adventure Land. Based on the concept art it embraces waterfalls, volcanoes, and geysers, keeping true to the thrilling spirit of nature and adventure. Near the large waterfall appears to be stick like structures which remind me of the aesthetic for the Indiana Jones roller coaster in Disneyland Paris; perhaps this will appear in Shanghai’s Disneyland as well? The entrance to this land seems like a foreign, tribal village similar to the nature of Animal Kingdom’s layout. This village seems to stretch throughout the park and end next to the waterfall.  There will be bridges throughout this area as well as a “Tarzan” musical performance. With so much water in the area, there’s bound to be a river rapids ride.

 Tomorrowland sports a sleek, new look as opposed to the other Disneylands and will host a Tron light cycle ride similar to Coney Island’s Steeplechase. Judging on the concept art, there will also be a performance/dance area near the attraction and different levels to walk on. There will also be a ride with the Dumbo structure, but the car is floorless offering an adrenaline rush for riders.  The characters from “Big Hero 6” will also be roaming about the park and a Buzz Lightyear ride will also be on the premises.

Treasure Cove is a “Pirates of the Caribbean” section themed to fit the most notorious of pirates like Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa.  From what I can discern from the concept art it will have an overall pirate theme. There’s an island that appears to be shipwrecks of boats, which could serve as a playground. The two large buildings on the opposite sides of the area will probably serve as rides judging by their sizes. The middle area hidden behind the ship will most likely be a little shopping district with meet and greets by Captain Jack Sparrow and his crew. Here will be the prize of the Shanghai Disney design team, a “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride complete with the latest state of the art technology.

The Gardens of Imagination appear to be based off of “Mulan” which works well because China is known for having beautiful gardens and botany.  The carousel will also reside here and it appears to be based off of the iconic merry go round from “Mary Poppins” and have its own uniquely designed horses.  The Dumbo ride will also be in this location of the park as well as the Wandering Moon Teahouse.

Mickey Avenue will act as the park’s Main Street USA, complete with shops and other novelties. However, it appears that it will be a different design from the other Main Streets; shifting from Walt’s design and venturing into dome buildings with balconies. There will also be Tsum Tsum merchandise sold and characters dressed in formal Shanghai attire throughout this section.

Fantasyland will feature the Seven Dwarves Mine Train and a ride called Voyage to the Crystal Grotto which will run beneath the castle based off the one from “Snow White”.  However, from what I can discern from the video, it appears that there will also be an attraction based on Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”. Judging by the colorful concept art and outfit (:39), it appears that there will be something based on either “Tangled” or “Hunchback of Notre Dame”; the outfit could be something inspired by “Lilo and Stitch”. The spinning thing also shown at :39 appears to be a honey pot, which could mean a possible “Winnie the Pooh” ride. There’s also a quick glimpse of a pirate ship (:45) similar to the famous “Peter Pan” ride in the other parks, which means that attraction could definitely be appearing at this Disneyland as well.

Other rumors pertaining to this new Disneyland involve guests being able to meet the characters of “Star Wars” and observe some of the film’s iconic props, meeting all of the princesses, engaging in a cinematic Luke Skywalker experience, interacting with a Marvel based attraction where customers can attend a mission briefing and meet Iron Man, Spider Man, and possibly other superheroes. Lodgings will include a hotel entirely devoted to  ”Toy Story” and a Shanghai Disneyland themed hotel.  

What’s interesting about this particular Disneyland is that it replicates Hong Kong Disneyland in the sense in which it stays to the land’s cultural roots.  For example, Shanghai Disneyland will feature a Mandarin version of “The Lion King” show in Disneytown, a shopping district adjacent to the theme park styled in Shanghai’s traditional Shikumen architecture. This architectural design could appear in other parts of the park, such as Mickey Avenue. Another example of keeping true to the culture is that there will be a section called the Garden of Twelve Friends, where the twelve Chinese zodiac symbols will be re-imagined as twelve Disney and Pixar characters.

Kingdom Hearts III: The Next Act

Good evening everyone and welcome to The Magical Mystery Blog.

E3 is getting closer and closer with every passing day, which means right now there is one thing on many video gamers minds:

Kingdom Hearts III.

So far we have received brief clips of the future game that is supposed to end the classic series of a boy who wields a keyblade saving Disney movie worlds. While we don’t know the release date (hopefully which will be revealed at E3), we do know a few things about it:

• The graphics will be far different from the last games, giving us a more clean and crisp look of the characters. The scenery will also look brighter, but with more depth.
  
• It will be available for the PS4.

• One of the worlds we will be returning to is Twilight Town.  There may be a return to Hercules’ world, based on the notion that one of the gameplay demos reveal Sora, Donald, and Goofy fighting the rock titan.
  
• From what it appears, the Disney character summons (Ex.:Genie, Stitch, Dumbo, Tinkerbell) have been replaced with Disney rides. In this clip we see Sora using classic Disney rides (Big Thunder Mountain (Big Magic Mountain) and Pirates of the Caribbean or Peter Pan’s Flight (Pirate Ship) to fight heartless and the rock titan. We also see him using a pair of guns to fight off the heartless; those guns could symbolize Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Toy Story Midway Mania, or another Disney shoot ‘em up ride.

• Kairi and Axel now wield keyblades. I highly doubt those two will be left out, especially being keyblade wielders.

• In one of the earlier clips, we saw Sora pick up Master Eraqus’ keyblade on the shores of Destiny Island. In the most recent clip, we see two people talking to each other. These two characters are theorized to be Xehanort and Eraqus as teenagers, based on their silhouettes. However, the one silhouette could be Zexion because he also wore his hair to the side.

• Kingdom Hearts III is supposedly the game to end the franchise. But is it really the final game? In the recent clip we see the words ‘the next act opens’ appear. If this is supposedly the last game, wouldn’t it say ‘the final act’? However, it’s been rumored that this game will tie everything together. We even see Sora from Dream Drop Distance staring at Vanitas and Xehanort. Or is that a dream sequence from that game?

However, we will have to wait for Kingdom Hearts III. It has just been announced that Shinji Hashimoto, the execute producer of Square Enix, claimed that Kingdom Hearts III will not be featured at E3. Until more news about Kingdom Hearts III emerges, we will have to wait with excited hearts, and tons of fan theories.

It's Time to Face Off

Greetings everyone and welcome to another entry of The Magical Mystery Blog.

This year, Face Off started its new season on the Syfy Channel. Face Off is a prosthetic competition show which started back in 2011 and is currently on its fifth season. In this season, contestants who have been on the show before (veterans) compete against newcomers.

Throughout the years, the audience has been treated to concepts based on various themes from Alice in Wonderland to zombie apocalypse. As an avid watcher of the show, I've fallen in love and been disgusted with what competitors have created. Below are my top twelve favorite Face Off creations, three from each season so far of Face Off. I will have the season, episode number, theme, and artist (or artists) for each concept.

12) Season 4, Ep. 9 – Mummy Mayhem – Kris -  this mummy is enough to lead an army of the undead.  With multiple horns protruding from its head, the detail work on this is horrifying but beautiful.  Crawling through Egypt’s mysterious pyramids, this creature rose to the challenge to fit the mummy theme.

11) Season 1, Ep. 3 – Out of this World – Conor & Jo – as opposed to going with the stereotypical green alien with big black eyes look, these two artists created something unique. The result was a creature with a sense of royalty and beauty. She is definitely a part of the cosmos in her own way with her head held high and an all knowing smile.

10) Season 1, Ep. 6 – The Dancing Dead – Tate – this creation has received quite the mouthful with a gaping, gory jaw and a tongue spewing out of it. With a stretched face dotted with blood and exposed intestines, this was one creature you would not want to meet down a dark road.

9) Season 2, Ep. 4 – Night Terror - Teisha –  Imagine walking down a street late at night and you stumble upon this thing scoping you out from the alley way. A few things pop into your head, mainly ‘good Lord what is that’ and ‘RUN’. This creation definitely lives up to being a ‘night terror’; it’s horrific, it’s beautifully detailed, and it will keep you up for hours to come.

8) Season 4, Ep 4 – Eye Candy - Anthony– this piece definitely catches the eye. Decked out to be the sergeant of sweets, this morph is neat, colorful, and beautiful.  It captures the sugary sweetness of candy and the overall clean look of a professional make up work.

7)  Season 2, Ep. 7 – Alien Interpreters – Rayce – while the other aliens kept their eyes, Rayce decided to be a little different. Showing off excellent detail and work, the result was a crimson creature from beyond the stars.

6) Season 1, Ep. 2  - Naked Ambition – Tom – there is a ton of detail to be admired and examined on this particular piece. Tom even sculpted hair for this creation and added traces of moss in between the rocky curves. The final design blended in with the theme.

5) Season 3, Ep. 9 – Junkyard Cyborg – Nicole – The concept is beautiful and not only does it meet the idea of a junkyard cyborg, but it can also be seen as a futuristic super heroine. This character is daunting but sexy, different but daring, and gorgeous. The eye piece especially is beautifully done.

4) Season 4, Ep. 5 – Two Heads Are Better than One – Kris and Eric F – this giant loomed over the other contestants with its two bulky heads and massive fingers, holding the model hostage. These two artists did something different than the other contestants who molded a head onto their models' bodies. Instead of doing just that, they went over the heads to do something unique.

3) Season 3, Ep. 2 – Pirate Treasure – Laura – this creation appeared as though it walked off the ship of Davey Jones and straight into the room. Its intricate detail combined the traditional scallywag of a pirate with the beauty of ocean life.  This concept fulfilled the challenge of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme given to the contestants.

2) Season 2, Ep. 8 – Burtonesque – RJ –The concept is beautiful but what makes it for me is that the actor got into character. Not only did he make the finished product come to life but he made it believable. This character feels and acts like he stepped right out of a Tim Burton movie; maybe a Burtonized version of The Tower of Terror?

1)  Season 3, Ep. 1 Star Wars Cantina – Roy – This was a gargantuan makeup job to do, especially on the first task. For it to be successfully executed was not only a victory for the artist but a treat for the audience and judges.  This creation was unlike the others in which the main focus was the person surrounded by immense details.

There's Magic in the Air Tonight

Welcome everyone to the finale of Disney Magic Mondays here at The Magical Mystery Blog.

Magic makes the best moments at Walt Disney World. Magic can happen while walking down Main Street or even just sitting on a bench at Hollywood Studios. It’s spontaneous and random, just like the nightly fireworks. At Disney World you’ll be able to tell when magic hits you because it seems like you've ascended into a world you've dreamed of. It’s a wonderful moment when it happens and when it does, you’ll be awestruck and filled with belief that anything can happen.

In my thirteen years of Disney, I've had some fantastic magical moments. Below are my top ten magical memories that I hope inspire you to visit Walt Disney World in the future.

10) ALL THE DESSERT – before it became Tutto Italia, it was Ristorante Italiano. Located in EPCOT’s Italy Pavilion, my family and I dined there year after year. Our last time there wasn't a pleasant experience and to make up for it, the waiter brought us a tray of all their desserts. All of them. Strawberry shortcake, tiramisu, and tons of others. He didn't have to do that but it brought a little magic to our night and a smile to my face.

9) A Fairy Surprise – remember how I mentioned in one of my previous entries you can wake up Tinkerbell if you arrived at the Magic Kingdom extremely early? Well, on my fourth year of Disney World I did just that. It was our last day and I wanted to go to that specific park because it was (and still is) my all time favorite. That morning the cashier handed me the bell and I rang it as loud as I could, yelling the pixie’s name, and telling her to wake up. In a matter of moments, she flitted before my eyes before fading away into the store.

However, that wasn't the last I’d see of Miss Bell that day. To this day I’m not sure how my mom hid this from me but she is good, I will say that. During our flight home, my mom managed to fall asleep. Reaching for my Nintendo DS in the carry on bag, I felt something squishy. I didn't remember packing anything of that nature and pulled out a Tinkerbell binder. Containing my joy behind a smile, I eagerly opened the purple binder. Inside was a few months’ supply of Tinkerbell themed school gear such as pens, post its, and many other items. No sooner school began, I used as much as I could of the pixie styled items.

8) Fantasmic – I solemnly swear that this is the most epic show I've ever seen at Walt Disney World. Discovering this my third year at Disney World, I was spellbound by the outdoor performance of fire, puppetry, and beauty. This show takes us through the dreams of the famous mouse himself where we are met with the ultimate battle of good vs evil. I would have to say that the part that spellbound me the most was Maleficent in her gloriously dark dragon form, appearing on the rocky stage, and spewing fire onto the surrounding island. Roaring into the night, she sent chills down my spine but made me grin in elation. After seeing this show for the first time, I made it a tradition to always see it whenever I went to Disney World.

7) Beneath the Orange Moon - in my tenth year of Disney, I was transforming into a young adult. High school wouldn't last forever and college would be starting soon. What I wanted to do with my life would have to be determined as soon as possible; I couldn't keep playing Kingdom Hearts forever and somehow turn it into a career. All these thoughts and concerns were getting to me on this particular vacation and I couldn't enjoy it.

One night after walking throughout the Animal Kingdom, I decided I needed some me time. The pool at our All Star resort was filled to the brim with vacationing teenagers and a few adults sneaking in some night swimming. Finding no calm among the noise, I managed to discover an abandoned pool. Palm trees looked down upon this pool as they seemed to hold up the moon on their hunched bark backs. A serene silence invited me to this miniature, almost glowing pool as I climbed in, and proceeded to float.

Staring into the tangerine moon, my thoughts started to meld into one: what will I do with my life? After an hour, my worries seemed to be absorbed by the water. The moon appeared to steal all the questions I had about myself and reminded me of where I was. I was in Walt Disney World for the tenth time. I was in high school with a few years left before college. At that time, I had nothing to worry about other than what park to visit tomorrow. Leaving the pool with boulders off my shoulders, I smiled, knowing I could relax for a few more years.

6) Finding Elwood – for as long as I dined at Disney’s House of Blues, I never noticed Elwood until my twelfth trip. My family and I always made it a point to sit out on the water because of the beautiful scenery, excellent breeze, and wonderful environment. At the start of our eighth year of Disney, we dined there but had to sit inside due to the terrible rain.  

During this time in my life, I had discovered The Blues Brothers which I still consider to be an excellent comedic classic, and by far the greatest combined work of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. Behind the bar area of the House of Blues was something I had never noticed before. Something that caused my heart to beat like a hummingbird flapping its wings. Hanging in the middle of the beers and vodkas rested a portrait of Jake and Elwood Blues. Giddy at this discovery, I whipped out my camera and proceeded to take a ton of pictures. Sadly, I had accidentally deleted the photos while cleaning out my camera.

5) She’s a Pirate – seniors tend to do crazy things in high school. Some drink outrageously, others party harder than the average human being, but I decided to become a pirate. On my senior trip to Walt Disney World, there was a miniature pirate show featuring Captain Jack Sparrow, and one of his sea dogs. While the outdoor performance was for children, I decided to be a part of this crowd. When Jack asked who would like to be a pirate, I raised my hand, and proclaimed my love for the dashing swashbuckler. He allowed me to join the group in declaring ourselves pirates and handed me a certificate stating my oath to piracy. Until the day I die, I will be a pirate.

4) Big Thunder Mt. Railroad – whenever my mom goes to a theme park she avoids roller coasters at all cost. During our first visit to Walt Disney World, we stumbled upon Big Thunder Mt. I knew it was a roller coaster, she didn't  So I convinced her it was a gentle train ride through the wilderness. She said it sounded like fun and climbed aboard with me and my dad.

As we began to ascend the dark tunnel, my mom suddenly realized that this was no tranquil train ride. After the first drop was where the fun began. A sudden rush of wind pushed our visors off to which my mom proceeded to scream like a fan at a QUEEN concert. Thankfully the hats were rescued by my dad who caught them and created a Kodak moment. Sadly, we lacked a Kodak camera. After the ride, I was relieved that she didn't want to strangle me for tricking her onto a roller coaster. However, she got her revenge the following year. 

3) The Haunted Mansion – as a child I hated the Haunted Mansion because I thought it housed cadaverous beasts from nightmares. The second year of Walt Disney World, my mom decided that she wanted to go on it. I’m not sure if it was payback from Big Thunder Mt. or her mere curiosity, but she dragged me through the queue. Throughout the ride I was horrified until we reached the end. When leaving the ride, my mom asked what I thought of the attraction to which I responded, “Let’s go again! Let’s go again!”

To this day she regrets taking me on the Haunted Mansion because I extremely adore it.

2) Halloween – for my sweet sixteen my dad decided to surprise me to a trip to Walt Disney World during Halloween. The weather was as warm as a hug, the season of spirits was in the air, and I was going to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. No sooner I entered our shuttle to the Magic Kingdom, comments about my costume arose like zombies. When we reached the park I became popular in just under a half hour with my outfit of the Haunted Mansion’s Beating Heart Bride (or as the Cast Members call her, Emily Cavanaugh Gracey).

After walking around the park, I managed to grab a seat for the Halloween parade.  Down Main Street U.S.A., a black mare charged through the night carrying a headless horseman with a flaming pumpkin in his grip. Through the roar of applause and wonder filled eyes, the parade started. Disney villains flooded the street, grooving out to some spirited music. Haunted Mansion ghosts waltzed through the street and in the distance, a skeleton band unleashed some wicked tunes. To top off this remarkable night was a glorious fireworks display which showcased the villains once more in orange and ebony tinted lights.

1) Bert is the Ultimate Sweetheart –Honestly, Bert is the first Disney character I ever remember seeing. As a child, I was convinced he was talking to me during the beginning of Mary Poppins. I’ll admit I had a crush on him when I was young but that faded over the years. Until I went to Walt Disney World that is, where he warmed my heart like hot fudge melting a scoop of ice cream.

The first time I met the chimney sweep was at Hollywood Studios. I was depressed because we were leaving the next day and I didn't want to leave Walt Disney World. It was our first time there and I had fallen in love with Cinderella’s Palace and wanted to live there.

 As the Disney Stars in Motor Cars Parade passed in front of me, I saw Bert riding his popcorn yellow horse from the movie’s horse race scene. Heavy with sorrow, I blew him a weak kiss which he caught in his hat and blew me one back. My frown was immediately transformed into a smile as I giggled and smiled with joy.

The second time I ran into Bert was on my sweet sixteen, our eleventh year of Disney. It’s rare to catch a glimpse of Mary and Bert strolling around Disney World and for them to show up on my birthday was something special. Honestly, I couldn’t ask for a better present than a hug from the chimney sweep and practically perfect nanny. It was by far one of the best birthdays and Disney experiences I've ever endured.

And So It Begins.

In a world where money can’t buy love and kittens have dominated the Internet, there is an aspiring writer who questions life’s randomness while attempting to hold onto logic. As for the sanity, well, that’s been lost. But who needs it anyway?

As you can see in my brief bio, it says that I’m a wannabe mermaid.

For those who don’t know what a mermaid is, it’s a half human half fish hybrid of beauty.  Most of you are probably familiar with these fantastic creatures from movies like The Little Mermaid, Splash, Aquamarine, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. There are also different types of mermaids portrayed in myths based on various cultures. For example, a mermaid in Japan is called a ningyo and is depicted as a half fish, half human.  Their tears can transform into pearls which have a high, magical value and their blood can be used to cure every sickness.

Another type of mermaid, the melusine, was often found in medieval bestiaries. It was always depicted as a twin tailed mermaid; sound familiar?

Starbucks: The coffee of lords and ladies who aren't afraid to tax their peasants to purchase it!

That’s right. Starbucks was around during the times of knights, dragons, and princesses.

My love of these mythological sea creatures started when I was a child. The mere idea of being able to see a completely new and different world beneath the waves fascinated me. Even more so, viewing that world without having to worry about running out of air meant I could explore it as long as I liked. I always wanted to see what it was like to endlessly adventure under the bodies of water and see a world I was not familiar with. However, there are other reasons as to why I’d love to be a normal mermaid. Here are my top five reasons:

    1)      You get to travel – as a mermaid you have the proper bodily functions to breathe underwater for extended periods of time, swim gracefully, and look fantastic doing it all. Now remember that all our worldly oceans are connected. Our seas are also joined to the oceans but are smaller in comparison. Each bear a different name and are different from the rest based on their creatures, depths, reefs, and many other qualities. For example, the Caribbean Sea possesses an amazing sight for divers, tourists, and others: The Cancun Underwater Museum.

In November 2009, construction was started on this project with the goal of promoting coral reef growth, the development of marine life, and conservation. By using neutral clay to sculpt over four hundred pieces of art, Jason deCaires Taylor was not only able to achieve his goals but feature some amazing sculpture skills as well. The Cancun Underwater Museum lies beneath the coasts of Cancun and Isle de Mujeres.  The Mediterranean Sea also shares something like this where the ruins of Cleopatra’s palace will also become an underwater museum. As a mermaid, you don’t need to pay the fee for renting scuba gear, airfare, a hotel room, possibly a rental car, or anything of the sort. You can just swim right into these aquatic museums (and other places) without travel expenses.

   2)      You get to see what land lovers haven’t– there are fathoms beneath the waves that humans have not explored yet. As a mermaid, you get to dive down deep into the undiscovered ocean. You get to see the wonders that have not met human eyes yet. You experience the sudden temperature changes, the nature of the different creatures and their habitats, the undiscovered artifacts of extinct cultures, and so much more.  You’re the first to see something new and amazing and explore it to your heart’s content.

   3)      Sunken ships and buried treasure – the idea encountering an abandoned, antique ship is thrilling. You question how long it was there, what purpose did it serve, how did it sink, when that shark get here? The excitement and curiosity builds greatly as you travel through the parts of the ship and examine each room. Down every corridor and through every cabin, the pieces fall into place. You begin to understand what happened, who was aboard, what type of people they were, and hopefully, escape that shark.  Sometimes, while exploring a ship or even on the ocean floor, you’ll even find buried treasure. While it’s not easy to find, it sure is a glorious surprise when you stumble upon it.  Gold coins, chalices, and gems? Yes, please!

   4)      Killing people with your voice – mermaids were also called sirens that lured sailors to their death by singing. The crewmen and captain would get so distracted by their beautiful voices that they would fail to control their ship and crash it into the nearest rock. This could come in handy if you want to destroy a ship with poachers, kidnappers, or any villain on board. Or you know, if your ex is on it, and you want to get some sweet revenge. Your soulful voice could probably also work on fellow jet skiers, motor boat captains, and many other aquatic crafts. However, I highly doubt it would work on a submarine.

There are also people out there who believe that mermaids are real; some even have theories and evidence to support their claim. Others just like to believe. But for those who don’t believe in mermaids, you can tell them to kiss your fins because as a mermaid, you exist! You’re a myth throughout the world and its numerous oceans. When people see you it’s like seeing a celebrity  - exclusive and amazing. The only thing you have to worry about is people attempting to capture you and using you.
